The balance of vitamins and minerals in our body is an underrated aspect of our health. Many of us take it for granted, but being deficient in just one area can cause a number of health problems.
Fortunately, many times a quick doctor’s visit and a blood test can resolve many of what appear to be more complex health problems on the surface.
One of those minerals that’s easy to slip on is zinc, primarily because the body doesn’t store extra, but it’s vital to your immune system and your ability to heal from wounds.
Besides vitamins and supplements, good sources of zinc are red meat, poultry, oysters, crab, lobster, seeds, nuts, whole grains, yogurt, and oatmeal.
Oneida Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing wants to lay out five issues that can occur due to a zinc deficiency.
Irritability
Zinc has been known to cause issues with mood (mainly irritability, low energy, nervousness, and depression) along with potentially exacerbating conditions like ADHD.
Rough or Dry Skin
Skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis can be caused by a zinc deficiency, along with rashes. As mentioned above, these can be caused by many different conditions, so letting your doctor know about these symptoms is key.
Diarrhea
A diarrhea that’s persistent (not just from a bug that may pass within a day or two) is actually the most common finding from a zinc deficiency.
Nausea
Doctors say nausea can not only be a sign of zinc deficiency, but from too much zinc too. Experts say it would be very difficult to get so much zinc from food that you have an adverse reaction, but taking too much zinc from supplements is more likely if you’re experiencing nausea like this.
Loss of Appetite
Appetite loss, along with dulled senses of smell and taste, is another telltale sign of not getting enough zinc.
